Fixing the dreaded “Unmountable Boot Volume” error

One unfortunately common problem is data corruption on a hard drive and the dreaded “Unmountable Boot Volume” error. Many people feel they are forced to format the drive and start from scratch in this situation. However, frequently there is a better way of save your installation, as long as you have the installation media available. Directions for both XP and Windows 7 included.

If you receive the “unmountable boot volume” error and have an installation disk, you still have a chance to save your system.

This error is frequently caused by unfortunate wear and tear corruption of the data on the hard drive. By using the following utilities, you often can repair the damaged hard drive and prevent a complete reinstallation of your system.

XP Directions:

1. Insert your XP installation disc into an optical drive and boot up your computer.
2. When you see a welcome screen, hit the R key on your keyboard. This will enter you into recovery mode with a DOS prompt.
3. Now type chkdsk /p and hit Enter. This will launch a utility which will check for errors on your hard drive.
4. After the process is done, type fixboot and hit Enter to repair any damaged boot files which may have become corrupted. When asked to say yes or no, type the Y key on your keyboard.
5. Type exit and press the Enter key to reboot your computer.

Windows 7 Directions:

1. Boot from the Windows 7 DVD.
2. Select Repair my computer.
3. Select Command Prompt
4. From the command prompt enter the following command: Chkdsk /R C: where “C” is your boot drive.
5. Answer Y to check the disk the next time that the system restarts.
6. Reboot the system. After the reboot, Windows will check the hard disk and try to repair the damaged area.
7. If you still get the error after this process, repeat the process but try rebuilding the master boot record at the command prompt with the following command: bootrec /fixboot and then rebooting

If your system can be saved, you should now be able to boot back into Windows without a problem!

To +gregoire intwali In order to successfully record Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 to a removable USB device, the device must meet the following requirements:
•The USB device must be low-level formatted before recording.
•At least 256 MB USB capacity.
•FAT16 or FAT32 file system.
If NTFS file system is installed on the device, you are required to format it in FAT16 or FAT32. Do not use an USB device with other operating systems installed on it, otherwise booting from Kaspersky Rescue Disk may be incorrect or end up with an error.

+ismael sarabia he meant this:

There's a quicker way that just worked for me! All you have to do is...
1. Start windows task manager, Ctrl+alt+delete and then pick the "task manager"
2. A small or big box should pop up, if it's a small box press the down arrow in the bottom left corner and if it's a big box don't do anything (yet)
3.press "file"
4. Press "new task"
5. Start a new task called Explorer.exe
6. It should work
7. Run a full virus scan as soon as possible
it will not work in your case Brendan stop Spam here

I afraid your have a big issues. Check if your hdd is spins/make any noise at all, it does not look like you have OS installed, it ether deleted and Kasper-sky can not recognize your registry file, or in worse case your hdd is dead. Likely your hdd boot sectors or NTFS partition info files is not corrupted, you would have crashes in blue screen after restart. Does your pc what it does after restart with out Kasper-sky? You may want to pull that out hdd and connect via usb enclosure to save your files. You know what try another thing, see if it is work, do step by step as I said: (try to reboot less is possible in this circumstances, or pressing power button always go .ctr. .alt. .del. combination)  Try this.
1.shut down your pc
2.unplug power supply
3.disconnect all sata, ata, ite, dvd,cd,etc. drives all hdd's including your OS hdd pull all usb peripherals beside mouse and keyboard
4.find reset button on your main board and reset motherboard if you do not have refer to your manufacture manual how to reset it
5. plug power supply back and power on pc
6. go to BIOS read here http://askpctech.blogspot.com/2014/09/what-are-f1-through-f12-keys.html
7. reset your bios to defauld
8. shut down your pc
9. unplug power supply cord
10. connect your OS HDD and plug power cord back
11. start your pc and press F1 after it will prompt, and tell me what is the message you will have, if non your pc may start
then fallow on screen message to proceed to Startup recovery

What OS do you run, your PC may not come with CD recovery Or you may don't have OS CD XP or Windows 7 perhaps, If it is newer system you must have Fx button witch will bring you recovery screen mode up and you can recover you machine, look here for identifying what is Fx buttons do and how to get your recovery or repair mode up and going

Make small error I changed it to:   Step one: Restart the pc, login in to system to see black screen, PC must be connected to INTERNET, black screen is should not affect that, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, to open Task manager, click on tub Application, click on New task, in opened window enter following command: "C:\Windows\explorer.exe". Explorer should start. Check your OS drive for system errors, by right click on drive "C" go to property and press check system for errors, select both boxes, click OK and restart your PC, let it scan at boot for system errors and repair them, it should take about 30 minutes, then restart your PC again, and you should be good to go.

Hey I downloaded Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 onto my laptop, then moved it to a usb, however when I plug the usb into my desktop and go to boot menu, after clicking usb the system doesn't do anything, it does the same thing as the default boot. This makes me wonder if there was any additional steps to creating the usb boot device that I missed. My usb device is empty and 2gb as well.

it has to be formatted sin special way, so it is like a boot device not a regular usb, read details on my forum or kaspersky site

I wanna try this but I actually never finished backing up my files so it might get deleted.

My Toshiba laptop loaded perfectly fine until windows starting then the screen went off (however the power indicators were still on)
Last night, while I was asleep my mum did a system recovery and it loaded fine this morning (BUT IT WAS EXTREMELY SLOW)

then after loading it went black screen with the cursor and shut down itself. When I switch it on, everything loads then black screen with cursor....

Have you look in to BIOS and see if it is even registered in System? Hope it is not dead. Look here how to eter  it: http://askpctech.blogspot.com/2014/06/how-to-enter-bios-or-cmos-setup.html

+John Patrick Conanan it look like you have live Toshiba MK6459GSXP - hard drive for some reason program can not see your hdd, if it shows in bios it should be show in KAS program. Is your HDD has more then one partition, and if you have previously use any other programms or delite anything from drive C? like you try reinstall windows and get to point where you formatted drive and windows files not there anymore, if one of that then you need to reinstall OS

So if this happens to a specific user account but not all I should be able to log in admin. Find the winlogon reg for the corrupted account and attempt to resolve.

Also any idea what virus is doing this? I've only recently experienced this but I think it's because I installed a new O/S and my antivirus was to outdated to protect from what I have on my secondary drives.

I'd like to know what I need to get rid of instead of blasting 2 drives.

I know it's not my main drive because I put an entire new partition table on it going from 7 to 10.

It does not have to be a virus, it can be other failures, also if kaspersky boot will not find virus then you don't have one, regarding your user names, when you in interface of kaspersky you will be able to see different Reg keys for different users, I have no experience with that case but it should be predicted by KS

+Allen West  It is possibility that your drive is dying
Remove the hard drive, mount it in an external USB case and attach it to a working system - you may be able to copy some or all of your files.
This is case when nothing will help, I survived even more worse problem two days ago, my pc start restarting once a day it self for 3 days till I get BSOD with this message that ntfs.sys is corrupted, ntfs.sys is the System file driver for NTFS and in my case I even connect that hdd to other pc's via external case, and docking stations, in all cases it cause pc's to crush in blue screen with same error. Solution was found by using USB/CD boot disk co copy and backup all the data: http://askpctech.blogspot.com/2015/01/bsod-caused-by-ntfssys-fix.html

+goasfaras youcansee I used Linux Ubuntu OS on a live USB , and booted it to recover the files from Windows. I was just hoping there was a simple fix ... They said they had a virus on the computer so they ask me to look at it. Is it possible that the virus corrupted the boot loader , and deleted video drivers ? If so will a simple wipe of the computer with Boot & Nuke , and reinstall of Windows fix the problem ? Do you think the Harddrive errors are cause by a virus , or is the harddrive trashed ?
Reply ·

goasfaras youcansee2 months ago

+Allen West It could have problems from the virus, but is very rare case virus, In your case is hard drive problem. See... how things usually endsup....? first case pc's restart whenever they deserve, eliminate and damage important system files, what all lead pc to crash, crush in it's order cause hdd's data errors, and last think is cluster's mess up, your problem is somewhere onthe middle, id is very good time to recover date use third party software running on linox/etc to fix hdd if it is possible, deep scans, boot ssectors repair, sometimes just don't know what to get waist day or two or buy new one...

I have noticed my AC Battery adapter is kindoff broken, a red cable is off(not weld in the AC adapter) from AC adapter towards my laptop plug.

Hey, don't worry, I think I found out a solution, what you have to do is,

1. Hold down the "off" button for about 5 secs so it shuts down completely
2.before turning your computer back on again, hold Shift, Control,Alt F2, F8 or F12 (you might not need to do these specifically, just try any function keys you now.
3. While still holding those down, turn it on and wait, don't let the functions keys off, keep pressing
A wait screen should appear and you're good, this should work

Hi I try this solution but it won't work in Windows 8.1.
"Double-click on the value Userinit - if there is not specified c:\ windows\system32\userinit.exe, a problem is found. To remove or worse.
Now enter the following value:
c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe "
Reply ·

LogicMind5 months ago

Oh and when I open the Userinit string the value is c:\ windows\system32\userinit.exe,
I try to remove the comma and restart still black screen with blinking cursor _
Reply ·

goasfaras youcansee5 months ago

do not touch second value C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe, you can just create it, work with the shell, do it again with Kaspersky step by stem, and after pc is reboot run startup recovery, because you may damaged system files during circumstances

Well!  I have tried all things, but tonite I did the turn on, repeatedly hit Control, Alt & Delete, then my f11 key showed up in orange light (never happened before) then repowered and did it all again, then I got stuff on the screen!  Wow, easy fix. I took this thing apart 3 times with no luck so just doing that power up control alt delete did it for some strange reason. Whew! Then I went to safe mode and did a recover to an earlier date.

after i connect the USB and boot it up, its says "missing operating system" HELP Plz!
Reply ·

Brendan Taylor1 month ago

There's a quicker way that just worked for me! All you have to do is...
1. Start windows task manager, Ctrl+alt+delete and then pick the "task manager"
2. A small or big box should pop up, if it's a small box press the down arrow in the bottom left corner and if it's a big box don't do anything (yet)
3.press "file"
4. Press "new task"
5. Start a new task called Explorer.exe
6. It should work
7. Run a full virus scan as soon as possible

If this wasn't clear enough or it didn't work feel free to message me.

heres a solution - if all else fails just get a meat tenderizer and give it a good whack 3x.

after all your computers stuffed so the obvious solution is to get a new one anyway - $400 is better than the $600 PC Techs charge for servicing.

$NZ600 - The average price in New Zealand for a PC Repair. Its best just to get a new one.

That's ridiculous! I do that for a living and can definitely say average is around $130. Dont ever call on anybody who advertises on the tv or radio or has a half page ad in the phone book. You will pay for the ad and get a contractor who couldn't care less... Think about that for a second and it makes a lot of sense.

+Chris Heffernan I agree with you, i had the same experians in Romania, it started with that it would cost 300 Lei, and at the end there needed to be placed a new mainboard in, and the total costed me 800 Lei. For 1400 Lei i could had buy a brand new laptop at Metro. But ok, with the black screen it is something irritating, because it came after a restart, and after i reinstalled windows it worked 1 time, and it went black again.

then you copy the last diretory that appears ,to copy you right click in cmd and choose "mark" and then copy all the diretory like this (c:/ .....etc,till the end) , and then paste it in the other line ,and click enter, and above in the other line write this:explorer.exe and click enter and your problem its fixed for now,but when you restart your pc the problem come back, but you just do it again, its tired way but you get used to it, but if you wanna solve it for ever, i wrote somewhere that you have to copy to a CD or something. i hope it helps you!!! :)

If you only get black screen when ethernet is plugged in, like I did, the Kaspersky tool is unnecessary. You can just type "regedit" in the start menu and directly edit the Windows registry without any additional software.
